A Peek Inside the TK Classroom

In Case You Are Wondering…

  • Class Name – This class has a unique name intended to avoid confusion for TK students whose next step is Kindergarten.
  • Curriculum and Academics – Our Kaleidoscope 22-23 TK students will receive the time and opportunity to practice the skills they need to go forward as confident, capable, creative learners ready to make a successful change as they set forth into elementary schooling. Class lesson plans encompassing five developmental domains are written weekly and shared along with current photos and daily activities on the class communication site, currently Shutterfly. TK students participate in the Early Literacy Lab (ELL). The mission of the ELL is to cultivate emergent reading and writing skills through dynamic early literacy activities. The classroom teachers are joined by an Early Literacy Specialist trained in depth through the Rice University School Literacy Culture Project (SLC). TK students also attend a weekly Science Lab designed to explore science problems through discussion, hypothesis, and hands-on experimentation. The Science Lab is led by a Science Instruction Specialist.
  • Student/teacher ratio – Please visit the program page for a breakdown of student/teacher ratios by age group: HERE
  • School Backpack – Kaleidoscope students may bring a backpack of their choosing for carrying belongings to and from school.
  • Daily Schedule – The Kaleidoscope class follows a daily schedule for consistency. The schedule includes morning meeting, learning center time, circle time, small group and large group instruction, outdoor classroom time, snack/lunch, and rest time.  Students attend the Science Lab and the Early Literacy Lab each week, as well. Parents receive the schedule for their child’s class at the beginning of the school year.
  • Outdoor Play – The TK class utilizes our Large Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom and is scheduled to play and learn outside every day.
  • Ancillary Classes – Kaleidoscope students participate in Music and Motor classes twice a week with instructional specialists.
  • Chapel Time– The Kaleidoscope class participates in an age appropriate joyous weekly worship service (not offered while under protective practice). This class presents the annual Nativity Play to our younger students. Additionally, when Chapel Time is in-person, TK students serve as Chapel Helpers.
  • Rest Time – Daily rest time is scheduled after lunch time. Individual rest mats selected for SLDS are purchased, used, and stored at school. TK students most often transition away from naps; a comfortable rest time is required with or without napping. After resting, the students continue instructional activities.
  • Lunch and snack – Students bring lunch and snack food in an insulated lunch kit with an ice pack to keep items cold. Any snacks served at school will be in individual containers.
  • Dress code – Students do not wear uniforms and instead dress in simple clothing for active play and learning. Rubber-soled, close-toed shoes are best for the school day. To distinguish their maturity, TK students are issued a unique class polo-style shirt.
