A Peek Inside the Infant Classroom

In Case You Are Wondering…

  • Class Names – Infant classes are Little Lambs, Lambs, and Kangaroos.
  • Infant Curriculum and Intentional Teaching – Our teachers develop individual relationships with infants by providing care that is emotionally and socially responsive, attentive, consistent, comforting, supportive, and culturally sensitive. Class lesson plans encompassing five developmental domains are written monthly and shared along with current photos and daily activities on the class communication site, currently Shutterfly. Activities are individualized for each infant’s progress.
  • Student/teacher ratio – Please visit the program pages for a breakdown of student/teacher ratios by age group: Lambs Here and Kangaroos Here
  • Your Infant’s Schedule– Parents and teachers discuss each child’s typical daily schedule, and feeding documentation is made available for the teachers’ reference. As your child’s schedule and feeding routines change, updates are made to the documentation.
  • Outdoor Play – Infants enjoy buggy rides and have a designated Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom. Outdoor activities begin once the infants have adjusted to their new environment and routines at school.
  • Daily Notes– A written note will go home each day to inform parents of nap times, food intake, diaper changes, and other pertinent information.
  • Shoe Removal– In order to better protect our non-mobile and newly crawling infants all adults and anyone entering the classroom will remove, replace, or cover with clean foot coverings any shoes they have worn outside that play area.
  • Naptime– Infants have individual cribs. For their crib, parents bring two fitted crib sheets (pack-n-play size) to class at the beginning of each week. Infants may wear a sleep sac during nap time. Parents may also send a pacifier, if needed.
  • Comfort items – Parents may send the child’s “lovey”, example, blanket, stuffed animal, or pacifier. Typically, teachers request a photo of each child’s parents as this is also a reassuring comfort item.
  • Breastfeeding– SLDS supports infant breastfeeding. Mothers may breastfeed in the classroom or in a comfortable Nursing Nook that is available for mothers who wish more privacy. (Please note, if Protective Practice continues only the Nursing Nook is available.)
  • Bottle Feeding – Parents bring the prepared bottles to school each day. Each class has a small refrigerator and a bottle warmer.
  • Food– As a child transitions from bottles to solid food, we encourage all food items to be sent in an insulated lunch kit with an ice pack to keep items cold. Any food, including snacks, served at school will be in individual containers.
  • Diapers – Parents supply the preferred disposable diapers and SLDS supplies the wipes.
