A Peek Inside the Toddler Classroom

In Case You Are Wondering…

  • Class Names – Toddler classes are Bunnies, Honeybees, Bears, Ponies, and Lions.
  • Curriculum and Intentional Teaching – Our Toddler teachers develop individual relationships with children by providing care that is emotionally and socially responsive, attentive, consistent, comforting, supportive, and culturally sensitive. Class lesson plans encompassing five developmental domains are written monthly and shared along with photos and daily activities on the class communication site, currently Shutterfly. Activities are individualized for each toddler’s progress.
  • Student/teacher ratio –Please visit the program pages for a breakdown of student/teacher ratios by age group: Bunnies/Honeybees Here and Bears/Ponies/Lions Here
  • Class Schedule – Each Toddler class follows a daily schedule for consistency. The schedule includes learning center time, circle time, small group and large group activities, music class, outdoor classroom time, snack/lunch, and rest time.  Parents receive the schedule for their child’s class at the beginning of the school year.
  • Outdoor Play – Toddlers enjoy outdoor buggy rides and have a designated Infant/Toddler Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.
  • Daily Notes – A written note goes home each day to inform parents of nap times, food intake, diaper changes, and other pertinent information.
  • SLDS School Bag – Children in Honeybees class receive a SLDS school bag to carry items from home to school each day. For the Bunnies, Bears, Ponies, and Lions classes, parents will send items in a diaper bag each day.
  • Lunch and snack – Students bring lunch and snack food in an insulated lunch kit with an ice pack to keep items cold. Any snacks served at school will be in individual containers. The full-day Bunnies and Honeybees classes each have a small refrigerator to hold dairy products only.
  • Naptime – Daily naps are scheduled after lunch time. Individual nap mats selected for SLDS are purchased, used, and stored at school.  For comfort, a fitted crib sheet (pack-n-play size) or a king-size pillowcase can be used on the mat.  Parents may also send a pacifier, a blanket, or a comfort item if desired.
  • Diapers – Parents provide preferred diapers. SLDS supplies wipes for the full-day program only.
  • Play Clothes – Students dress in simple clothing, including jumpers and rompers, with openings in the diaper area. Rubber-soled, close-toed shoes are best for the school day.
