Parent Advisory Council

If you’re interested in learning more about any of the positions listed below,
please contact the 2025-2026 PAC Chair, Katie Garoni (sldspacchair@gmail.com).

BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB
At the beginning of the school year, parents are given the opportunity to purchase a Birthday Book Club book to honor their child’s birthday and to help stock the library. The child’s teacher reads the book to them in their classroom, then the child takes the book home for a period of time before returning it to the library. The Birthday Book Club Chairs organize and maintain the files of participating children and the distribution of the books in a timely manner – to be received before a child’s birthday. The Chairs coordinate with the Library Chair on the intake processing of new books.

BOOK BAGS
Book Bags are themed bags containing two or three books and several related objects, games or activities. Pre-K and TK students can check out these bags and bring them home to enjoy. The Book Bag Chairs and volunteers they recruit and manage are responsible for helping Pre-K and TK children check book bags out and in, maintaining and updating current book bags as needed. Book Bag Chairs should expect to work weekly to distribute the books and commit to cleaning out and updating all the bags at year-end.

BOOK FAIR
The week of Book Fair includes Grandparents’ and Special Friends Night, Dad’s Breakfast, parent lunches, kids’ activities, visits from Santa, one of the city’s best selections of age-appropriate books…and much more. Book Fair has two chairs – a Chair, and a Co-Chair who will return the following year as Chair. The Chairs manage a committee of approximately 20 members. Funds raised by Book Fair support special projects as identified by the school administration and tuition assistance for students.

BUSY PARENTS
The Busy Parents Chair will coordinate at least one playdate and one parent outing per semester, as well as promoting participation in school and church events, such as Sunday playground playdates. The Liaison will also position him/herself to be a resource and conduit of information between the Day School administration and parents working outside the home during school hours.

CHURCH LIA
ISON
The Church Liaison will sit on the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Children’s Council and share information about Children’s Ministries and the church at large with PAC members. This is typically not a stand-alone position and may be held by a member of PAC who is also chairing another committee.

FUNDRAISING
The Fundraising Chair leads fundraising efforts to support special projects at the school. First, the Chair leads underwriting campaigns for two major fundraisers – Book Fair and Spring Picnic – with direct mail and online communications to parents and special friends. Additionally, many businesses donate a percentage of proceeds on goods or services purchased.  With volunteers, the Fundraising Chair coordinates and communicates these opportunities or events (such as Box Tops for Education and Spirit Nights) and is responsible for maintaining existing relationships and cultivating new ones.

TRANSPORTATION DAY
Working closely with the Facilities, Resource & Events Manager and the Resource Coordinator, the Transportation Day Chair will coordinate the school’s Transportation Day. Claire maintains a list of established contacts and resources, and the Chair may also add new resources to the list. The Chair will handle communications and scheduling with these contacts, manage logistics, and be present on the day of the event when needed.

HOSPITALITY
The Hospitality Chairs will serve as friendly faces and an information resource to families at St. Luke’s Day School, especially new families. The Chairs will host new family socials each semester, coordinate PAC Perks coffee hours, write notes of congratulations or condolences to families experiencing life events, and work closely with the Spring Picnic Chair to welcome new families who attend the picnic.

LIBRARY
St. Luke’s Day School is host to a full and dynamic children’s library. Library Chairs work under the direction of the school librarian and recruit volunteers to help with the constant re-shelving of the library. Chairs will hold a volunteer information session, train volunteers on the computer system and re-shelving process, and assist with the processing of new books. Chairs can expect to work in the library at least once a week.

PEP Talks (Preschool Education for Parents)
PEP Talks are held approximately five times throughout the year, featuring speakers who address parenting, child development and other interesting subjects. PEP Talks will be held at 9:30 a.m. on the days when Kingdom Kids childcare is available. PEP Talk Chairs are expected to work with school administration to help determine topics, secure speakers, publicize the event, and set up.

PICTURES & INFO SESSIONS
The Pictures & Info Sessions Chair works with the Day School office in the coordination of volunteers for individual and class pictures (Fall), and volunteers to assist with formal Information Sessions (November, January, and February). Picture volunteers will assist the photographer, as well as assist classes getting to their on-site photography session on time. Information Session volunteers will attend one or more tours and be available to greet prospective parents and answer their questions.

PUBLICITY
The Publicity Chair coordinates school communications with the goal of ensuring parents are well-informed and engaged in the life of the school.  Tasks include assisting the PAC Chair with a monthly PAC newsletter, streamlining room parent messages in partnership with the Room Parent Chair, recommending posts for the SLDS, Book Fair, and Spring Picnic Instagram accounts, and coordinating other school-wide event publicity for activities such as PEP Talks and PAC PERKS.

ROOM PARENTS
Each classroom has one or two room parents selected by the teachers. The Room Parent Chair hosts Room Parent trainings in September so they understand their role. Throughout the year, the Room Parent Chair serves as a conduit of information to parents through the room parents and may also communicate directly with parents.

SECRETARY

The PAC Secretary is responsible for taking minutes of the PAC meetings, sending them to the school Director and PAC Chair for approval, and emailing them to the committee (including the Admin team) monthly. Minutes for the year will be stored digitally.

SPRING PICNIC
Spring Picnic is the school’s annual picnic, celebration and fundraiser, for the whole family. On Blanton Field, families participate together in fun activities, enjoy good food and music, and experience fellowship with other St. Luke’s families. The event also includes auction items and sometimes class projects. Spring Picnic has two chairs, a Chair and a Co-Chair who will return the following year as Chair. The Chairs manage a committee of approximately 20 members. Funds raised from Spring Picnic support special projects as identified by the school administration and tuition assistance for students.

TEACHER APPRECIATION
The Teacher Appreciation Chairs host monthly appreciation treats for the school’s teachers. Formal luncheons are held in August and May, and the remainder of the months are informal. The Chairs recruit and manage parent volunteers who bring desserts to serve at the formal luncheons. The Chairs also prepare table decorations for luncheons and treat days.
